Around the World... One Journey at a Time. Around the World... One Journey at a Time.

Welcome to Our Journeys

Eight years ago, my daughter Genevieve (then 8 years old) remarked, “We are not a normal family.” I froze, waiting to hear what was next. She laughed and said, “We’re a traveling family!”

Traveling has enriched our lives on so many levels, and our shared experiences have pulled us even closer together as a family.  Almost ten years ago, we had a goal to travel around the world. While we were intrigued by other families who had taken a year off to have a grand adventure, this did not appeal to us. Instead, we chose to experience the world one journey at a time. Each year, we spent as much time as we could exploring new places, while maintaining balance with our work commitments and the children's school schedules.

Trip by trip, we connected to the magical places that called to our hearts--the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, the Amazon rainforest, Paris, the castles of Portugal, the salt plains of Bolivia, the mountain villages of Bhutan,  the glaciers in Alaska, the Grand Canyon, and so much more. In between the journeys, we had plenty of time and emotional space at home to savor all of the things that we had experienced. Our travels have slowed over the past few years. To everything there is a season, and other priorities have surfaced for now.

You can view our indepth photo-stories by selecting a blue-titled journey from the chronological list below, or selecting a country or site from the long list in the "Places We've Been" column. We would love to hear from you if you have any comments or questions!

2013 Journeys

Namibia, Africa
After years of planning, we finally traveled to Africa in June of 2013. We chose Namibia because it not only has stunning scenery and animals galore (elephants, giraffes, zebra, lions, hippos, rhinos, and much more), but we could drive ourselves throughout the country independently without a guide. The experience surpassed our wildest dreams.

Costa Rica
In January, we ventured down to Costa Rica, where we fell in love with the beautiful countryside, the gracious people, and the abundant wildlife—especially the monkeys and the fascinating sloths.

2012 Journeys

Eastern Canada
Near the end of the summer, we took a road trip through eastern Canada. From the roaring Niagara Falls to small towns beyond Quebec City, Canada surprised us all.

Sedona & Beautiful California
During Spring Break, we meandered out to the stunning red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, while taking time to enjoy three beautiful national parks in California along the way—Yosemite, King’s Canyon, and Joshua Tree.

Puerto Vallarta Area
Our family rang in the 2012 New Year in the Puerto Vallarta area of Mexico, balancing our time between the small surfing town of Sayulita, the isolated community of Yelapa, and the vibrant historical center of Puerto Vallarta.

2011 Journeys

In December, I traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico with my girlfriend Chris. With her local family members giving us the insider’s scoop, we explored the rural areas and towns in the hills above Oaxaca City, and also took a road trip to the beautiful Pacific coast.

North to Alaska

During the summer, we embarked on a 2-month journey north to Alaska, winding our way through western Canada. The land of the midnight sun was everything we dreamed and more, with with massive glaciers, welcoming people, bears and other wildlife galore, and stop-dead-in-your-tracks beauty.

From the heights of the Andes Mountains to the depths of the Amazon rain forest, Ecuador gave our family an unforgettable experience.

Big Island of Hawaii
With its warm water, large sea turtles, colorful fish, volcanoes, and Hawaiian culture, the Big Island provided the perfect setting for a blend of relaxation and family adventure.

2010 Journeys

Moab, Utah
Ben and I took off for a week to Moab, Utah, to ride dirt bikes on some of the best trails we have ever experienced. We covered slick rock roller coasters, ledge climbs, deep sand washes, and crusty single track, all set among incredible red rock landscapes.

Glacier National Park, and Dirt Biking in the Pacific Northwest
We ended the summer with a 4-week RV trip through Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. Along the way, we challenged Genevieve and Sebastian’s dirt biking skills with some fun trail rides, and we were awed by the grandeur and beauty of Glacier National Park.

Paris, Barcelona, and a Bit of the Basque Country
Our summer began on a high note with a trip to Paris and the top of the Eiffel Tower. We then hopped aboard a high-speed train to northern Spain, where we spent a few days exploring the Basque area. The grand finale was a week in beautiful and vibrant Barcelona, along the Mediterranean coast.

Although our suitcases were light, we packed a lot of experiences into our 17-day journey through China. The highlights include hiking the Great Wall, visiting caves that held over 50,000 carved Buddhas, seeing the Terracotta Warriors, and relishing the tranquility of a rural farming community in the “gumdrop” mountains.

Route 66 Through the Southwest U.S.
We spent two weeks meandering along Route 66 from Santa Monica, California to Gallup, New Mexico. We also ventured off the Mother Road to visit many scenic wonders, and rang in the New Year by traversing the Skywalk at Grand Canyon West.

2009 Journeys

In mid-September through early October, Ben and I traveled to Machu Picchu and then rode dirt bikes throughout northern Peru, in the high Andes Mountains and parts of the Amazon jungle.

Two Months Around the United States
During the summer, our family ventured on a two-month, cross-country RV trip to experience the wonders of the United States. Our round-trip route stretched from California to the North Carolina Outer Banks, with many exciting places and activities in between.

In April, our family spent 18 days exploring some of the communities in the colorful state of Oaxaca, as well as Mexico City and the peaceful villages surrounding Lake Patzcuaro.

Southern California/Death Valley
We celebrated the New Year with a two-week RV trip to Los Angeles, San Diego, and the amazing Death Valley.

2008 Journeys

Bhutan and Northeastern India
In November, Ben and I spent two glorious weeks riding motorcycles along the twisty roads of the Southern Himalayas.

Pacific Northwest
In August, we ended the summer holidays with a two-week RV trip through Oregon, Washington State, and Vancouver.

Grand Canyon/Southwest
In June, we took an RV road trip to see the wonders of the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde, Bryce Canyon, and Las Vegas.

Baja, Mexico
In May, Ben and I rode our dirt bikes over some incredible trails through the high desert mountains along the Pacific Coast.

In March/April, our family traveled through Portugal for 16 days, exploring castles, winding our way to the central mountains near the Spanish border, and soaking in the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea.

2007 Journeys

In November/December, Ben and I rode motorcycles 2200 miles through the high altiplano and the jungle areas of Bolivia, including the “Death Road.”

Baja, Mexico
In May, Ben and I rode our dirt bikes through a challenging series of trails over the mountains from the Sea of Cortez to the Pacific Ocean, including the single track called the “Rockman Trail”.

Our family spent two magical weeks in Madrid and the heavenly region of Andalusia.

Planning Our Adventures

For us, each journey begins with the initial heart pangs to venture to a certain part of the world. Then the ideas start coming together . . . ahh, the possibilities . . . and the dream evolves gradually into an actual plan. But, oh, the joy of the dream!  Click here to learn more about how we plan and prepare for our journeys.

Words for the Heart

“. . . and then the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”
